INTER-CULTURAL MANAGEMENT: CURRENT ISSUES AND NEW PERSPECTIVES 3 day seminars in Granada, Spain Introduction There is no longer any doubt that management conceptions, strategies and praxis have to be redefined taking into account different cultural, ethnical and national contexts. And this challenge affects any type of enterprises, and all levels of activity, perhaps with an added effect on small companies and independent professionals, as they do not have the large institutional resources with a diversified and internationalised personnel, nor do they enjoy the financial leverage which would allow them to take risks in other countries, or in previously untested markets. The range of key issues at stake is enormous:
And yet, the current new trends of globalization and market integration and submersion, specially in Europe but increasingly also in other regions, tend to make the whole picture even more complicated, as some of the old certainties seem to fade away, while the new ones are still unstable, provisional and fragmentary. National and regional language divisions seem on the increase everywhere, information technology and greater access to cheaper transportation tend to speed up the inflows and outflows of all skill-type of labour, thereby altering the traditional picture regarding availability of human resources, and each national market demands a specific and well-suited strategic approach. Programme It is a three-day intensive seminar aimed at managers, entrepreneurs and professionals interacting in a multi-cultural environment or willing to do so. Approximately 12 hours of intensive lecturing and coaching are balanced with a well-planned programme of culture and entertainment in Granada, Spain, a city which, like few others in the world, represents historically the coexistence and melting of different cultures and religions. The programme combines both a rigorous theoretical and methodological approach – together with relevant latest empirical studies. Although the instruction and main language is English, a certain degree of flexibility can be given to those occasionally wishing to use another language. Seminar Director Juan Carlos Herken was born in South America, living mainly in Europe for the last three decades, and received most of his education in England, where he obtained his M.Sc. in Economics at Birkbeck College, University of London in 1981, and his Ph.D. at the London School of Economics in 1986. He received the Guggenheim Fellowship in 1989. He enjoys an extensive international experience as journalist, economist and professor, having spent long terms in Great Britain, France, Germany, Morocco, Russia, Spain and Ukraine, lecturing for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in economics and management. Very comfortable in many international languages, he is currently also conducting research on intercultural management, as well as on the economics of the new global corporations coming from the developing world.
