Arabic Language and Culture Print E-mail

Heirs and bearers of almost ten million years of history, the Arabs, in whose idiosyncrasies lies a rich cultural heritage, are considered to be one of the greatest contributors to global civilisation. Examples of this can be seen in their vast contribution to literature, sciences, philosophy, medicine, mathematics, algebra, astronomy, art, architecture and decoration. One of the oldest surviving languages in use today, Arabic forms a unifying feature of the Arab world.

Semitic language, like Aramaic, Hebrew, Akkadian, Maltese and other similar languages, is considered to be one of the most important languages of our time. It is the fourth most widely spoken language by its natives (after Chinese, English and Spanish). Arabic is the very essence of Arab culture and is a source of enormous creative potential.

ImageArabic is the official language of twenty-three (23) countries: Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, Yemen, Egypt, Somalia, Djibouti, Sudan, The Union of the Comoros, Libya, Chad, Tunisia, Algeria, Mauritania and Morocco.

The Arabic alphabet is derived from Nabataean and has many calligraphy styles, which vary according to the era and geographic region. Standard Arabic is based on a consonant system represented by 28 letters, the second most widely used writing system in the world to be adopted by other non-Semitic languages, such as modern Persian (Farsi), Urdu, Malay and some West African languages, such as Hausa.
